Universal KYC could potentially double SBI MF's SIP book, says Joint CEO

SBI Mutual Fund is focusing on digital channels to drive its next growth phase, with Joint CEO DP Singh indicating that the introduction of Universal KYC could potentially double its monthly SIP collections by enabling customers to invest via YONO with the same ease as opening a fixed deposit.
At present, India’s largest asset manager gathers about Rs 4,000 crore every month through systematic investment plans, and roughly Rs 1,300 crore around one-third comes from the SBI branch network. Singh expects that simplifying the onboarding and investment process through Universal KYC will significantly boost mutual fund participation from SBI’s large banking customer base.
“The biggest opportunity now is digital distribution,” Singh told Moneycontrol. “Customers are increasingly transacting online instead of visiting branches. Work on Universal KYC is in progress, and it is expected to be rolled out around July or August. Once that happens, customers should be able to invest through YONO as smoothly as they open a fixed deposit. With SBI’s more than 530 million customers, including about 21 million salary accounts, we see substantial headroom for growth through the SBI channel and believe the SIP book can easily be doubled.”
The untapped potential is considerable. Although SBI services around 530 million banking customers, only about 5.5 million currently invest in SBI Mutual Fund schemes, leaving a very large pool of prospective first-time MF investors.
Managing Director and CEO Debasish Mishra noted that the mutual fund industry’s next leg of expansion will hinge on adding new retail investors rather than just increasing wallet share from existing ones.
“Our top priority is to grow the retail investor base,” Mishra said. “India is still in the early stages of mutual fund penetration. SBI has about 530 million banking customers, but only around 5.5 million unique mutual fund investors. Over the next two to three years, our main focus will be to increase retail participation and widen our market reach.”
Singh added that digital distribution will work alongside, not in place of, SBI’s extensive physical network, which remains a major strength for the fund house.
“Our monthly SIP book is around Rs 4,000 crore, and nearly Rs 1,300 crore—about one-third—comes via the SBI network. Our intermediary business contributes a similar proportion. The SBI distribution moat is very strong,” he said.
The approach also mirrors evolving investor behaviour.
“In the past, families used recurring deposits for specific goals; now they set up SIPs for children’s education, weddings, overseas travel and retirement,” Mishra observed. “SIPs have turned into a goal-oriented investment vehicle, highlighting the ongoing financialisation of savings in India.”
Addressing the belief that investment products compete with bank deposits, Mishra said SBI’s internal experience indicates that such products actually deepen client engagement with the bank.
“Customers who hold investment products like SIPs tend to have a much stronger relationship with the bank,” he said. “Our internal analysis suggests that a savings account combined with digital banking and an investment product such as a SIP is roughly four times more valuable than a regular savings account. This is an internal estimate, not a disclosed figure, but it reflects what we see on the ground.”
According to Singh, the broader SBI Group fully supports this strategy.
“The Chairman of State Bank of India also heads the board of SBI Funds Management, and he consistently reminds us that we cannot avoid offering investment products to our customers. If we want them to stay with us, we must provide investment solutions in a structured way. Any assets we gather through the bank ultimately add value to the bank itself. So our interests are completely aligned,” he said.
For SBI Mutual Fund, digital distribution is expected to be a key lever not just for scaling assets but also for widening mutual fund participation. As more banking services move online, the fund house believes that making MF investing as straightforward as opening a fixed deposit can help bring millions of new investors into the capital markets.
