Brokers hold out relief hope ahead of Reserve Bank of India's credit norms

With only one day remaining before the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) revised rules on bank lending to capital market intermediaries come into force, brokerage firms are anticipating that some concessions may still be granted.
People familiar with the matter said that a four-member team representing brokers met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) Secretary Anuradha Thakur on June 24 to request easing of the proposed norms. According to these sources, brokers have also held discussions with officials of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on the same subject.
The RBI’s updated framework, originally slated to start from April 1 but subsequently postponed, is now set to be implemented from July 1.
